Crisis in Indian agriculture explained: Why farmers are destroying their tomato crop

For the second year running, prices of tomato and capsicum have crashed drastically at the time of harvest, leading to massive losses for Haryana farmers. Many farmers have resorted to destroying the crop in the fields itself, to cut their losses. While for the past two years, the problem has been aggravated due to the lockdown, vegetable farmers have almost always suffered due to sudden downward spiral in prices at the time of harvest. Horticulture farmers are now demanding an MSP system in vegetables as well. In this video, we try to find out whether an MSP system is possible for farmers and discuss other ways through which farmers producing vegetables can be protected from sudden price fluctuations.
